Quick Answer: How Do You Get Lovebugs Off Your House?
Wet the spots with a hose, wait a few minutes so the dried bugs soften, then wash with mild soapy water and a soft brush or sponge. Rinse well. Do not scrape, and do not blast them with high pressure.
| Surface | Best Way to Clean | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Painted walls and stucco | Soak, then soft brush with mild soap | High pressure, stiff wire brushes |
| Garage door | Soak, then a sponge or wet dryer sheet | Scraping with a blade |
| Windows and glass | Soak, then a soft cloth and glass cleaner | Dry paper towels on crusty bugs |
| Car paint | Soak with a wet towel, then car wash soap | Leaving bugs on for days in the sun |
| Pool cage screens | A gentle soft wash | Pressure washing the screen mesh |
When Is Lovebug Season in Tampa?
Lovebugs come in two big waves each year in Florida. The spring flight is usually in late April and May. The fall flight is usually in late August and September. Each wave lasts about four to five weeks.
They only fly in the daytime, mostly from late morning to late afternoon, and only when it is warm. At night they rest on low plants. Each adult lives just a few days, but new ones keep hatching, so it feels like they never stop.
In spring 2026, Tampa’s swarms started light because of the drought, then got thick in late May.
Why Are Lovebugs Attracted to My House?
Nobody fully knows. Florida bug experts say lovebugs seem drawn to heat, car exhaust and light-colored paint. That is why the sunny side of a white house, the garage door and the cars in the driveway often get hit hardest.
Some experts say the light-color idea is only partly true. Either way, the spots near your driveway, garage and front walk are where you will clean the most.
Lovebug babies grow in dead grass and rotting leaves. A thick layer of thatch in the yard can mean more of them nearby.
Can Lovebugs Damage Your House?
Here is the honest answer. The damage people talk about most is on cars. When lovebugs bake onto car paint in the hot sun for a few days, they can leave small pits or marks.
On house walls, the main problem is the mess. Dead bugs and their eggs dry into hard, crusty dots. Rain and sun bake them on, and dirt sticks to them. The longer they sit, the harder they are to wash off, and the more likely they leave a faint stain.
So the safest plan is simple: clean them off within a day or two, especially on light paint, garage doors and windows.
How to Remove Lovebugs From Your House, Step by Step
- Wet everything first. Spray the spots with a garden hose. Let the water sit for three to five minutes so the bugs soften.
- Mix a gentle cleaner. A bucket of water with a little dish soap or car wash soap is enough.
- Wash softly. Use a soft brush, sponge or microfiber cloth. Work from the bottom up so you do not get streaks.
- Rinse from the top down. Rinse well so no soap dries on the wall.
- Repeat on stubborn spots. Soak again instead of scrubbing harder.
Skip the high-pressure wand. It can strip paint, scar stucco and push water behind siding and window trim.
Garage Doors, Windows and Cars
Garage Doors
Metal garage doors get hit hard because they face the driveway. Soak the door, then wipe it with a sponge or a wet dryer sheet. A wet dryer sheet loosens dried bugs on smooth metal. Rinse when you are done.
Windows
Never rub crusty bugs with a dry paper towel. It smears them and can scratch the glass. Soak first, wipe with a soft cloth, then finish with glass cleaner.
Your Car
Cars need the fastest care. Lay a wet towel over the front bumper and hood for a few minutes, then wash with car soap. A fresh coat of wax before the season makes bugs much easier to wipe off.
Screens and Pool Cages
Screens are easy to tear, so they need a different method. See our guide to pool cage and screen cleaning.
How to Keep Lovebugs Off Your House
- Close the garage door during the middle of the day when they fly the most.
- Run porch and lanai fans on high. Lovebugs are weak fliers.
- Wax your car before each season starts.
- Keep your lawn mowed and bag the clippings so less thatch builds up.
- Plan outdoor painting for when the season is over, so fresh paint does not trap bugs.
Bug spray does not help much. There are too many lovebugs, and new ones keep flying in.
When to Call a Pro
Most small spots are an easy weekend job. Call for help when:
- The bugs are high up on a two-story wall.
- The whole side of the house is speckled after the season.
- The spots are mixed with mildew or green growth.
- You want the walls, windows and driveway done at once.
A gentle soft house wash takes off lovebug spots along with dirt and mildew, without high pressure on your paint.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do lovebugs bite or sting?
No. Lovebugs do not bite, sting or spread disease. They are just messy.
How long does lovebug season last in Tampa?
Each flight lasts about four to five weeks. The spring flight is usually in late April and May, and the fall flight is usually in late August and September.
Can I pressure wash lovebugs off my house?
Use a garden hose or very low pressure instead. High pressure can strip paint, scar stucco, crack old caulk and tear screens. Soak the spots, then wash gently.
Do wet dryer sheets really work on lovebugs?
Yes, on smooth surfaces like car paint, glass and metal garage doors. Wet the sheet, rub gently, then rinse. Do not scrub hard on flat house paint.
Will bug spray keep lovebugs off my house?
Not really. There are too many of them and new ones keep flying in. Cleaning early and timing outdoor jobs works better than spraying.
Do lovebugs ruin house paint?
The best-known damage is to car paint when bugs are left on for days in the sun. On house walls the bigger problem is crusty spots and stains that get harder to clean the longer they sit, so wash them off within a day or two.
