Water is the secret. Wet plants before, rinse them after, and they stay healthy.

Quick Answer: Is Soft Washing Safe for Plants and Pets?

Yes, when it is done the right way. Plants are soaked with plain water before and rinsed after, the cleaner is kept off leaves, runoff is kept out of drains, and pets stay inside until everything is rinsed and dry.

What Is in a Soft Wash Mix?

Most soft wash mixes use a cleaner called sodium hypochlorite. It is the same active ingredient as household bleach. It is mixed with water and a little soap so it sticks to the wall and kills mildew and algae at the root.

House washing uses a much weaker mix than roof cleaning. That is why the cleaner, not high pressure, does the work, and why it is gentler on paint and screens.

How Soft Washing Can Hurt Plants

Plants get hurt when the cleaner sits on their leaves and dries in the sun. That can cause brown or yellow leaf edges, called leaf burn. Roots can also be stressed if a lot of runoff soaks into one bed.

The good news: water makes a huge difference. Wet leaves soak up much less cleaner, and a good rinse washes away what lands on them.

How Plants Are Protected, Step by Step

  1. Soak plants first. Every shrub and bed near the wall gets a good drink of plain water.
  2. Cover delicate plants. Tender plants and vegetable gardens can be covered with a light sheet for a short time.
  3. Clean the gutters. Clogged gutters can dump cleaner straight into flower beds.
  4. Keep the mix on the wall. Low pressure and careful spraying keep overspray down.
  5. Rinse plants again. After the wall is rinsed, the plants get another soak.

Some crews also use a neutralizer on plants after rinsing. Ask what your company does.

What About Your Lawn?

Grass near the house can get brown spots if runoff pools on it. Rinsing the lawn edge before and after the wash keeps the mix spread out and weak. If you see a little browning, give the area a deep watering. Healthy grass usually bounces back.

Is Soft Washing Safe for Dogs and Cats?

Diluted bleach is usually a mild irritant for pets. If a pet licks a wet, treated surface, it may drool, vomit or get an upset stomach. Strong, undiluted bleach is more dangerous.

  • Keep pets inside while we work and until surfaces are rinsed and dry.
  • Pick up water bowls, toys and pet beds from the patio first.
  • Rinse paws if your pet walks on a wet area.
  • If your pet licks the mix and seems sick, call your vet. Do not make your pet throw up unless your vet says so.

Pools, Ponds and Storm Drains

Cleaner should never run into your pool, a fish pond or a storm drain. Drains in Tampa lead to lakes, rivers and the bay.

  • Cover or block runoff near pools and ponds.
  • Block storm drains near the driveway during the wash.
  • Keep runoff on your own property, where the soil breaks it down.

What You Can Do Before We Arrive

  • Water your plants the evening before.
  • Move potted plants, toys and furniture away from the walls.
  • Close windows and doors.
  • Keep pets inside for the day of the wash.
  • Point out any plants you care about most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will soft washing kill my plants?

Not when it is done right. Plants are soaked with water before, rinsed after, and delicate ones can be covered. Most problems happen when strong cleaner dries on dry leaves.

Is soft wash solution bad for grass?

It can cause brown spots if runoff pools on the lawn. Rinsing the grass before and after keeps it safe, and a deep watering helps any spots recover.

How long should pets stay inside after soft washing?

Keep them inside until all surfaces are rinsed and dry. That is often a few hours on a sunny day.

What if my dog licks the soft wash cleaner?

Diluted bleach usually causes mild drooling or an upset stomach. Rinse its mouth with water and call your vet if it seems sick. Do not make it vomit unless your vet says to.

Can soft wash runoff hurt my pool?

A little splash is not a big deal, but runoff should be kept out. Ask your crew to cover or block the pool edge.

Is soft washing safer for plants than pressure washing?

The cleaner is the bigger risk, not the pressure. But low pressure means less overspray, and good soaking and rinsing protect plants with either method.
